Treating Pets with Ear Medications

To treat your pet's ears with medication, try to following steps:

Tilt the animal's head so the ear to be treated is 'up.' (If your pet's ear flap hangs down, lift it as you are tilting the head.)

Medicated ointment:

Place a small squeeze of ointment at the entrance of the ear canal. Gently pull the ear flap up (to help 'straighten' the canal) and massage the base of the ear. This will help the medication coat the entire ear canal.

Medicated Drops:

Place the drops so they fall down into the ear canal. Gently pull the ear flap up (to help 'straighten' the canal) and massage the base of the ear. This will help the medication coat the entire ear canal.

When the next treatment is due, first clean the entrance to the ear of any wax or debris using a soft Kleenex placed over your finger. Clean only as deeply as your finger will easily go. (Using a Q-tip to clean between the ridges that you can see is ok, but never push a Q-tip deep into the ear canal.)

The above is general veterinary information. Do not begin any course of treatment without consulting your regular veterinarian. All animals should be examined at least once every 12 months.
